For my project on Bessie Coleman, I aimed to shed light on the remarkable yet often overlooked story of the first African-American woman and first Native American to earn a pilot license, as well as the earliest known Black person to achieve an international pilot's license.
As part of my "Untold Stories" initiative, I created a concertina to display this artwork, using it as a medium to narrate her inspiring journey. The theme of identity is a crucial element in my work, especially when exploring unseen identities that shape our narratives.
Bessie’s story not only highlights her pioneering spirit but also serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of representation in art and illustration. Through this project, I hope to inspire others to recognise and celebrate the diverse identities that enrich our history and culture.
